The sunshine is out in full force, and so is Johnson County Park and Recreation District’s 50 Plus travel department.

We are offering a wide variety of trips and travel-themed programs to quench your wanderlust this summer.

Upcoming nature walks and outings include:

  • Green Hills of Platte Wildlife Preserve, Thursday, July 13.
  • Nature Outing: Flint Hills Discovery Center at Manhattan, Kansas, Thursday, Aug. 3.
  • Prairie Center Park (Prairie Center Nature Reserve Loop), Tuesday, Aug. 8.

July’s Lunch & Learn is about “Alcatraz - 250 Years on the Rock” at noon Tuesday, July 18, at Matt Ross Community Center, Overland Park. The program will feature a light lunch and a presentation from a former ranger about the history, preservation and prisoners of Alcatraz. Presenter will join the program live from California via Zoom.

Summer day trips include:

  • “It’s a Blast” to Hutchinson and an opportunity to tour two of the 8 Wonders of Kansas, including the Strataca underground salt mine and the Cosmosphere space museum on Wednesday, July 26. Cost is $155.
