Criminalistics Laboratory

The mission of the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office Criminalistics Laboratory is to aid in criminal investigations through timely, unbiased, high quality forensic services performed by highly trained experts using state-of the art instrumentation and scientific techniques.

Crime Lab Sections

The Johnson County, Kansas Sheriff's Office Criminalistics Laboratory employs Forensic Scientists in various areas of education and expertise to include, Biology/DNA, Controlled Substances, Crime Scene Investigation, Digital Evidence, Firearms & Toolmarks, Latent Prints, Toxicology and Trace Evidence.

Crime Scene Investigation

The Johnson County, Kansas Sheriff's Office Criminalistics Laboratory Crime Scene Investigation section responds to and processes a vast spectrum of crime scenes including homicides and other death investigations, sexual assaults, battery cases, robberies, burglaries, etc.

Toxicology

The Forensic Toxicology section of the Johnson County, Kansas Sheriff's Office Crime Lab uses validated scientific methods and highly sensitive instrumentation to assist in the detection and identification of a broad scope of drugs and chemicals in biological samples.

Latent Prints

The Latent Print section of the Johnson County, Kansas Sheriff's Office Crime Lab handles requests for fingerprint analysis and is also responsible for helping identify deceased individuals when requested by the Johnson County Medical Examiner’s Office.

Firearms & Toolmarks

The Firearms and Toolmarks section of the Johnson County, Kansas Sheriff's Office Crime Lab is responsible for the examination of firearms, bullets, cartridge cases, ammunition components, tools, toolmarks, defaced serial numbers on firearms, and fabrics with bullet defects to determine approximate distance.

Digital Evidence

The Digital Evidence section of the Johnson County, Kansas Sheriff's Office Crim Lab provides services that include identification, collection, preservation, analysis, and reporting of data stored on evidence in an electronic format.

Controlled Substances

The Controlled Substances section of the Johnson County, Kansas Sheriff's Office Crime Lab tests a variety of evidentiary items for the presence of controlled substances and new designer drugs (which may or may not be controlled). Items tested include powders, liquids, plant material, pills, capsules, pipes, and various forms of paraphernalia.
