Older Americans Month, established in 1963, is celebrated every May. Led by a federal agency, the Administration for Community Living, OAM is a time to recognize older Americans’ contributions, highlight aging trends and reaffirm commitments to serving the older adults in our communities.

Life expectancy has increased dramatically over the past 50 years, yet societal expectations of older adults have changed little. Also, people are generally unprepared for this increased longevity.
Kansas Legal Services helps 60+ residents at three sites
The Johnson County Department of Aging and Human Services partners with Kansas Legal Services to offer the following services to Johnson County residents who are 60+:
Project DASH partnership provides frozen meals
Last year, Johnson County Aging and Human Services began a partnership with Door Dash’ s Project DASH, which is helping deliver meals to homebound seniors throughout Johnson County.
Volunteer spotlight shines on Kay Voorhees at SHICK
In July 2023, the Johnson County Area Agency on Aging once again began providing Senior Health Insurance Counseling for Kansas. SHICK counseling was previously provided by the AAA until 2014. One familiar face with SHICK counseling in Johnson County is Kay Voorhees.
