Get Involved with Corrections
Internship
The Johnson County Department of Corrections offers internship opportunities for college students who are interested in learning about the corrections field and gaining hands-on experience in a professional setting. Interns may work in residential facilities, community programs, or administrative areas depending on their interests and program requirements.
Eligibility
- To be considered for an internship, applicants must:
- Be at least 18 years old
- Be enrolled in an accredited college or university
- Be classified as a junior or senior in their academic program
- Be participating in a college internship program
- Pass a criminal background check
Interns who work with adult or juvenile clients may also be required to complete additional screenings, including abuse registry checks, a health assessment, and tuberculosis testing.
Application Process
Students interested in an internship must submit an application and resume. Qualified candidates may be invited to interview to determine the best placement within the department. Internship length and placement may vary based on program requirements and departmental needs.
Volunteer
Volunteers serve in numerous capacities throughout the department, specifically at the Adult Residential Center in New Century and the Juvenile Detention Center in Olathe, as well as out in the community. We rely on volunteers to provide support and community engagement to the clients we serve, as many of them feel disconnected and unwanted by society. Please check out our Volunteer Descriptions to find out what volunteer positions we have available!
Volunteers receive training in the areas of safety and security and our staff are committed to the safety of everyone in the facility, including volunteers. Our training covers all rules, regulations and guidelines that volunteers must know in order to be prepared to work with our clients and enter the facility.
All volunteers must pass a background check, attend new volunteer training, and get a TB test, all provided by Corrections at no cost to you.
Note: In order to volunteer with the Department of Corrections you must not currently be on supervision (parole, probation, diversion, house arrest, etc.) and must have at least a minimum of one year off all supervision.
