General Election Day is Nov. 7, 2023, and the Johnson County Election Office would like to encourage voters to be election ready.

This is a county-wide election with approximately 455,000 eligible Johnson County voters. Local offices on the general election ballot include mayor, city council, school board members, Johnson County Community College trustees, and Water District #1 of Johnson County board positions. Voters in the City of Shawnee will have two ballot questions regarding the future funding of city infrastructure projects.

“Presidential elections may receive the most attention, but the individuals elected to these nonpartisan positions have a direct impact on the social, economic, and educational aspects of their communities,” Johnson County Election Commissioner Fred Sherman said.

There are three ways for voters to cast their ballot — in-person on Election Day, during advance voting in person, or advance voting by mail. Advance voting, by mail or in person, can help voters avoid potential lines and delays on Election Day.

“We recommend voters to consider all options for casting their ballot,” Sherman said.

Important Dates

  • Oct. 28 – Advance voting in person begins.
  • Oct. 31 – Last day to apply to vote by mail.
  • Nov. 6 – Advance voting in person ends at noon.
  • Nov. 7 – Election Day.

Advance Voting by Mail

Per Kansas law, voters must apply to vote by mail for each election unless they have been diagnosed with a permanent illness or have a permanent physical disability. Individuals can apply for permanent advance voting status at jocoelection.org or call 913-715-6800 for more information.

Registered voters can continue to apply to vote by mail until Oct. 31.

Advance ballots must be postmarked by Election Day or returned to one of the eight drop box locations across the county by 7 p.m. CST on Election Day. Voters can also return their advance ballot in person at an advance voting location or an Election Day polling place during voting hours.

In-Person Advance Voting

All registered voters in Johnson County are eligible to vote early in-person. Unlike advanced voting by mail, voters do not need to apply to participate. Ten polling places will be open for in-person advance voting in Johnson County starting on Oct. 28. Hours and locations can be found at jocoelection.org.

In-Person Voting on Election Day

Polling places will open at 7 a.m. and close at 7 p.m. on Nov. 7. Voters can view their assigned Election Day polling place, sample ballot, mail-in ballot status, and more at voter.jocoelection.org.
