Johnson County to send out estimated property tax notices

Sample estimated tax notice mailer for 2023

On or before Aug. 10, 2023, Johnson County will send more than 240,000 estimated property tax notices to property owners as required by Kansas law.

The estimated tax notice will include a revenue neutral rate compared to a proposed rate for each taxing authority. The revenue neutral rate is the tax rate that would generate the same property tax revenue as levied the previous tax year, using the current tax year’s total assessed valuation.

The notices will provide the dates, times, and locations for public hearings to be held by each taxing authority intending to exceed their revenue neutral rate. The notices are estimates only, and special assessment charges are not included. The actual tax for property owners may increase or decrease from this estimate.

This is the second-year taxpayers will receive estimated tax notices. As a reminder, these notices are not bills and should not be paid. Property tax statements will be issued in mid-November, and the first-half payment is due on or before Dec. 20, 2023.
