Johnson County Election Office gears up for primary election

Primary Election Day is August 1, 2023, and the Johnson County Election Office would like to encourage voters to be election ready.

Approximately 160,500 Johnson County voters are eligible to participate in this election, which will feature 23 candidates across seven contests. The two candidates who receive the most votes for each contest in this election will be listed on the November 7, 2023, general election ballot.

“Although this is smaller election with only seven contests, we are administering this primary election in a safe, secure and accurate manner as we would any other election,” Election Commissioner Fred Sherman said.

There are three ways for voters to cast their ballot — in-person on Election Day, advance in-person, or by mail. Advance voting, by mail or in-person, can help voters avoid lines and delays on Election Day.

“We recommend voters to consider all options for casting their ballot,” Sherman said.

Advance Voting by Mail

Per Kansas law, voters must apply to vote by mail for each election unless they have been diagnosed with a permanent illness or physical disability. Individuals can apply for permanent advance voting status online or call 913-715-6800 for more information.

Registered voters can continue to apply to vote by mail until July 25. Voters who applied to vote by mail before July 12, but have not received their ballot, can call (913)715-6800.

Advance ballots must be postmarked on Election Day or returned to one of the three drop box locations across the county by 7 p.m. CDT on Election Day. Voters can also return their advance ballot in-person at a polling place during voting hours.

In-Person Advance Voting

All registered voters in Johnson County are eligible to vote early in-person. Unlike advanced voting by mail, voters do not need to apply to participate. Voters can cast their ballot at any of the six advance voting locations that will open July 22. Hours and locations can be found at jocoelection.org.

In-Person Voting on Election Day

If voters choose to vote in-person on Election Day, they must do so at their designated polling site under current Kansas election laws.

Voters can find their designated polling site on VoterView or on a postcard that was sent from the Johnson County Election Office earlier this month. VoterView is a paperless resource for voters to find important voting information, including sample ballots.

Election Day polling sites will open at 7 a.m. CDT and close at 7 p.m. CDT.
