Johnson County celebrates community volunteers during National Volunteer Week

County staff and volunteers hold a proclamation for National Volunteer Month

Johnson County recognizes the work of volunteers across the community. At Thursday’s Board of County Commissioners meeting, the Board proclaimed the week of April 21-27, 2024 as National Volunteer Week in Johnson County.

This year’s National Volunteer Week theme, “Celebrate Service,” is an opportunity to celebrate the people who serve Johnson County. National Volunteer Week also encourages residents to participate by volunteering.

Jorge Gaona, volunteer and programs coordinator, Johnson County Corrections Volunteer Community, accepted the proclamation alongside volunteers and other volunteer coordinators – representing departments/agencies/offices from Aging and Human Services to Johnson County Library.

Volunteers play a vital role in our community, and their selflessness and dedication help support those in need throughout the county – whether it’s food assistance, nonprofit work, military service or another valuable service.

Johnson County Government also relies on volunteers to support many of its functions. In 2023, Johnson County had 22,893 volunteer slots filled, totaling more than 356,000 hours of service – the equivalent of 171 FTEs. Volunteers contributed $11.3 million in service to the county.
