On Wednesday, July 12, the Johnson County Housing Authority will accept online applications for its Housing Choice Voucher Program waiting list from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. JCHA will place the first 1,000 applications on the waiting list.

“The Housing Choice Voucher Program is a federally funded program designed to provide subsidies to very low and extremely low income families, allowing them to locate decent, safe housing while maintaining rental payments at an affordable level,” said Heather McNeive, Johnson County’s director of Housing Services. “We are pleased to be able to provide an opportunity for people to join our waiting list for this program.”

JCHA provides rental assistance to qualified applicants who wish to live within its jurisdiction. The City of Olathe has its own housing authority and is not within the jurisdiction of JCHA. Preference will be given to applicants with the following:

  • Residency – An applicant who lives in Johnson County excluding the City of Olathe. Additionally, applicants who work or have been hired to work in a residence preference area will be treated as residents of the preference area. (Verified by current driver’s license, current state identification, current lease, current utility bill, or employment verification.)
  • Domestic violence survivors– Domestic violence means actual or threatened violence directed at the applicant or another member of the household. The domestic violence should have occurred recently (within the last 12 months) or be of a continuous nature. By claiming the survivor of domestic violence preference, the applicant must certify that the perpetrator will not reside with the applicant family unless the Housing Authority gives advanced written approval; the JCHA may terminate assistance for breach of this agreement. (Verified by Domestic Violence Shelter or Police Report.)
  • Elderly and/or disabled – An applicant who is at least 62 years of age and/or disabled. (Verified by birth certificate, Social Security Administration, or Medical Assessor.)

Applications must be submitted online. The application will not be available prior to 9 a.m. on July 12. Applicants will need to set up an account prior to submitting an application.
