The Best Times is a monthly newspaper provided for all Johnson County residents aged 60 and over, publishing articles that inform, challenge, support, entertain, and persuade. In September 1982, The Best Times began as a pilot program funded through a grant from the Older Americans Act and the state of Kansas. Later the paper became a regular publication of Johnson County Human Services. It is currently published monthly by the County Manager's Office.
The Best Times is mailed directly to 57,000 Johnson County households with a family member 60 or older. The mailing list is updated monthly from the Johnson County voter registration rolls, or residents may request that their names be added. For families outside of Johnson County and others, there is a $15 annual subscription fee.
It is also available for pickup from libraries, senior centers, and multi-service centers. Readership is estimated at 75,000.
ARTICLE SUBMISSION GUIDELINES Contact Gerald Hay, Managing Editor Gerald.Hay@jocogov.org (913) 715-0736
Many articles are written by freelance professionals and readers. Other articles are provided by the Area Agency on Aging. If you would like to submit something for publication, please contact the managing editor via e-mail (preferred) or phone. Describe the nature of your submission (essay, profile of a resident, profile of an organization/service, poem, etc.) and how you think it fits into the mission of The Best Times in serving Johnson County senior adults. The editor will let you know whether the proposed piece is a good fit and ensure that it hasn’t already been covered in The Best Times. If the piece is accepted, you will be given a word count. You’ll be asked to e-mail the piece, preferably as a Word attachment, to Gerald.Hay@jocogov.org.
Many articles are more dynamic with a photograph. Digital photos by e-mail are preferred, but photos on film can be scanned and returned.
They should be mailed to: Editor, The Best Times, 111 S. Cherry St., Suite 3300, Olathe, KS 66061.
The Best Times has a limited budget for purchasing freelance work. Most profiles or essays receive $80 and most poems $45. A higher rate is occasionally paid for an article that requires multiple sources and extensive interviews. You will be asked to submit a W-9 form (which will be mailed to you) in order that we may generate an invoice for your work. You will not receive a 1099.
