Fort Leavenworth Military Road

The Fort Leavenworth Military Road was a north-south route marking the eastern boundary of the “Indian frontier.” The road eventually connected Fort Snelling ( Minnesota) and Fort Towson ( Oklahoma.)

The Fort Leavenworth Military Road intersected the Santa Fe trail near present day Lenexa. Many troops traveled down this road during routine marches or to head south on the Santa Fe Trail. Some troops sent to fight in the Mexican War from 1846-1848 traveled this route.
