Johnson County earns national recognition for exceptional human resources program

The Johnson County Board of County Commissioners today recognized the county’s human resources department for winning the IPMA-HR Agency Award for Excellence from the International Public Management Association for Human Resources.

“I am very proud to be a part of Johnson County and to have the privilege of leading such a remarkable team,” said director of human resources Becky Salter. “This award recognizes the efforts of the entire team to help Johnson County become the higher performing organization it aspires to be.”

The IPMA-HR Agency Award for Excellence recognizes the overall quality, accomplishments and contributions of an agency personnel program that exceeds the normal operation of a “good government personnel program.” The award is based on agency program initiatives, accomplishments and contributions within a three-year time period.

Johnson County Human Resources’ winning submission highlighted the department’s efforts to advance the county’s high-performance culture:

  • What began as an effort to build future leaders within the current workforce of Johnson County Government has become a major cultural shift.
  • Instilling the desire to become a higher performing organization required commitment and contribution at all levels of the organization, especially in an organization already performing at a high level.
  • Evidence that the culture is changing can be seen on the front lines and within each department and agency of Johnson County Government.

“The efforts of the HR team have not occurred in a vacuum,” Salter added, “but in conjunction with many others throughout the organization who are working to build a stronger culture of excellence through collaboration and leadership.”

The national award was presented to Johnson County Government at IPMA-HR’s annual conference in San Antonio recently.
