Today Johnson County Board of County Commissioners Chairman Mike Kelly released the following statement.

“Today I was informed that Secretary of State Scott Schwab intends to swear in Connie Schmidt as the election commissioner of Johnson County, Kansas. As with all county representatives — appointed, elected, or employed — I wish her success and look forward to proactively collaborating for the best service to the voters of Johnson County. 

I do, however, have concerns about the process by which candidates for this critical role were identified and interviewed. Only one applicant was put forward, and the selection committee interviewed that single candidate. Because the committee had only one candidate to consider, the county’s representatives were unable to recommend anyone for submission.

“Trust in our institutions is crucial, especially when it comes to the constitutional right of free and fair elections. I felt we owed a greater duty to the people of Johnson County through this process. But ultimately, the Secretary of State decided to move forward with this appointment.

Any questions regarding this decision should be directed to the Secretary of State’s office. I will continue to work with all partners — local, state and federal — to ensure accessible and fair elections in Johnson County."
