Update: In collaboration with Johnson County Wastewater, the Johnson County Department of Health and Environment has lifted the public health advisory to residents and businesses near 87th Street and Mission Road in Leawood put in place on July 25, 2025. Water quality test results indicate that bacteria levels have returned to normal.
In collaboration with Johnson County Wastewater, the Johnson County Department of Health and Environment has issued a public health advisory to residents and businesses near 87th Street and Mission Road in Leawood, due to a 24” forcemain break.
Crews have diverted the flow away from the broken forcemain to a second functioning forcemain and the active leak has subsided. Sanitary sewer service in the area is not affected. Please see attached the map.
Crews are working to clean up the area to prevent further contamination, and JCW’s water quality lab team is testing the water in this area. This includes the waters upstream of the break, the creek leading to the pond, the pond waters, and the water downstream of the pond. The testing locations are marked on the attached map.
Out of an abundance of caution, due to a potential risk of E. coli exposure, JCDHE advises individuals to have no contact with standing water in this area until further notice. Residents are also advised to keep their pets from making contact with standing water in the affected areas. This does not represent any impact/implications to the public water system (i.e., tap water).
JCW will post signage in this area, is monitoring this location and conducting water quality tests to determine when this notice can be lifted. An update will be sent once this notice is lifted.
