Public Health Advisory: Potential hydraulic fluid leads to temporary closing of Lamar Ave. bridge over I-35

Update: The public health advisory has been lifted. Cleanup is complete and all lanes are now open.
In collaboration with Johnson County Wastewater, the Johnson County Department of Health and Environment has issued a public health advisory to residents and businesses near I-35 and Lamar Ave. due to the potential presence of hydraulic fluid on the roadway.
The Lamar Ave. bridge over I-35 will have periodic closures this afternoon out of an abundance of caution and to facilitate the cleanup. The fluid came from a contractor’s vehicle associated with the Nelson Improvement Project. The Kansas City, Kansas Fire Department is on the scene, and the EPA has been notified. Hydraulic fluid on the roadway makes the roadway slippery, increasing the risk of accidents.
As a precaution, JCDHE advises individuals to avoid this intersection until further notice. This does not represent any impact/implications to the public water system (i.e. tap water), and no accidents have been reported in connection with this incident. There are no other anticipated risks to public health at this time.
