New HHW facility to soon open in OP

Rendering of New Household Hazardous Waste Facility

By Brandon Hearn

2023 will mark the 30th anniversary of the Johnson County Household Hazardous Waste drop-off facility.

It will also mark the last year it will be located at its current location in Mission off I-35 and Lamar. Due to construction at the Nelson Wastewater Treatment Plant where the HHW facility is located, a new and improved facility is being built in Overland Park off College Boulevard and Mastin Street.

All of the same items will still be accepted, you can continued to recycle your unwanted latex paint, stain, yard chemicals, cleaners, tires and much more. The only change is the location with a new building.

Residents will still be able to purchase reblended latex paint and can still shop in HHW’s Free Store where usable items are made available to the public.

The current facility located in Mission is expected to remain open until the end of April and will still be accepting materials until that time. The new HHW facility is tentatively set to open in early June, an exact opening date will be announced once construction of the new facility is completed.

Updates on the status of the new facility and any changes to our drop-off schedule will be posted on the Johnson County Government webpage: jocogov.org/hhw. You can also receive updates through the Johnson County Department of Health and Environment and Johnson County Recycles Facebook pages.

The city of Olathe also operates a similar HHW facility that any Johnson County resident can use at 1420 S. Robinson Dr. You can find more information on that program through their website at olatheks.org and search: Household Hazardous Waste.
