Juvenile Detention Center recognized for youth rehabilitation efforts with 2024 Barbara Allen-Hagen Award
The Juvenile Detention Center, operated by the Johnson County Department of Corrections, has received the 2024 Barbara Allen-Hagen Award from the Center for Improving Youth Justice.
This award recognizes facilities that are dedicated to improving the lives of young people through evidence-based practices and continuous improvement.
Located near downtown Olathe, the Juvenile Detention Center holds youths ages 10-17 alleged to commit a juvenile offense. During their stay, youths attend school and treatment groups while awaiting their next steps – detention hearings, state custody placement, placement into a Kansas State Juvenile Correctional Facility, or release back to their legal guardians.
“We’re honored to receive this year’s Barbara Allen-Hagen Award. This achievement reflects the hard work of our staff at the Juvenile Detention Center, who are devoted to improving the lives of our justice-involved youth and constantly looking for ways to improve their services,” said Robert Sullivan, director of the Department of Corrections.
The center was selected for its innovative efforts to involve families in the reintegration process of their children. Notable was its response to challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic. During the pandemic, the center had reduced visitation to 30-minute virtual visits, which parents and caregivers said wasn’t enough. They eventually expanded visitation hours and also added special in-person events.
Community Connection Days – which take place quarterly on Saturdays – are more relaxed than regular visitation time, which typically focuses on issues such as court cases. These events help strengthen family connections through food, fun and games. They’re an opportunity for families and caregivers to spend quality time with their children.
The Juvenile Services Center’s efforts highlight the importance of family support in youth rehabilitation. In addition to these events showcasing innovation, the Barbara Allen-Hagen Award represents the center’s commitment to treating justice-involved young people with dignity and respect.
“This award reflects our efforts to better serve those in detention and their families, and the impact on our youth goes beyond detention. Our Community Connection events help them strengthen their family relationships, which are key to their successful return to the community,” said Jodi Taylor, deputy director of the Juvenile Services Center.
