Johnson County unveils expanded 2026 property tax relief program for low-income residents
Today, the Johnson County Board of County Commissioners approved an expansion of a property tax relief program designed to benefit more residents who fall within federally set very low income limit ranges.
Launching next year, the property tax relief program approved today expands upon a previous pilot program that was available only to seniors and disabled veterans with income and home values below a certain level. With today’s changes, the Board of County Commissioners has made the relief program available to more Johnson County residents by removing the age limit and disabled veteran status requirements and increasing the maximum home value criteria needed to qualify.
“We know that property taxes are a major concern for many in Johnson County,” said Mike Kelly, Chairman of the Board of County Commissioners. “By expanding access to this program, we can provide meaningful, targeted tax relief to our residents who need it most. I encourage all who are eligible to apply when the application window opens early next year.”
Residents applying for the program will need to provide proof of income, and to receive a property tax relief payment, participants in the program must also:
- Be a resident of Johnson County
- Own and occupy their home
- Have a home with a maximum 2025 appraised value of $500,000
- Be current on property tax payments for their residence
- Be at or below the Very Low Income limits set by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development
