Johnson County Transit provides update on Paratransit (RideKC Freedom) eligibility audit

As part of Johnson County’s ongoing effort to strengthen its paratransit services (RideKC Freedom, formerly known as Special Edition, and Swift), Johnson County Transit is currently conducting a full eligibility audit. Here’s where things stand:
- New applications remain paused. This temporary pause allows Transit to review and improve how eligibility is determined. We understand this is inconvenient and appreciate your patience.
- Current customers are not losing service. Your service will continue as normal.
- Customers due for recertification during the audit will not be removed from service. Instead, they will complete their recertification as part of the audit process.
What to Expect
- All current customers will be interviewed—either by phone or in person.
- Most interviews will be conducted by phone.
- In-person interviews will be arranged for selected group homes and participating programs or organizations that travel as a group and have agreed to help us coordinate the process.
- Customers will be notified in advance of their scheduled interview date. Notifications will be shared through printed materials—likely flyers or similar notices—to make it easier to reach everyone.
- You'll also receive a “What to Expect” guide with helpful details about the interview. (We’ll share more about that in a future update.)
- Need to reschedule? A dedicated phone number and email address will be available if you need a different time slot.
This audit is about getting a clear understanding of who Transit serves and how it serves them. While no one’s eligibility status will change during the audit, some customers may be contacted afterward if their interview raises questions about continued eligibility. If that happens, Transit will reach out individually to discuss options and next steps.
What’s Next
Updates will continue to be shared in our Newsroom. Any critical information or changes that affect service will be communicated directly to impacted customers.
Transit will announce its reopening date for new applications in late May or early June, once it's ready to move forward.
Thank you for your patience and partnership as Johnson County Transit works to improve transit services for everyone.
