Johnson County Government is adjusting its Johnson County United transit options as FIFA World Cup 2026™ Kansas City activities wind down across the region. These transit options launched in June to offer safe, reliable transportation for residents and visitors throughout this summer’s tournament.

Airport Drop and Ride shifts to 60-minute schedules through Sept. 20

Beginning Friday, July 17, the Airport Drop and Ride service will adjust to 60-minute schedules and continue running through Sept. 20.

Service hours are:

  • Monday – Friday: 4 a.m. to 11 p.m.
  • Saturday: 6 a.m. to 10 p.m.
  • Sunday 6 a.m. to 8 p.m.

The Airport Drop & Ride service is a pilot program designed to provide convenient, fare-free service between Kansas City International Airport and stops at Lenexa City Center and the Overland Park Convention Center.

Made possible through a limited, one-time funding allocation, this pilot program has provided 3,708 trips as of July 9 and has received positive feedback on passenger satisfaction surveys.

Operating the Johnson County United Airport Drop and Ride pilot until allocated funding was exhausted has been the county’s strategy since the Johnson County Board of County Commissioners adopted the agreement for this service in December 2025. Ensuring 30-minute service frequency during World Cup, coupled with increased diesel fuel costs and higher-than-expected maintenance costs, led to the expected completion of the service on Sept. 20, 2026.

Link service ends on July 13

Additionally, Johnson County United’s Link service concludes after the completion of its scheduled routes on Monday, July 13.

This service began on June 9 and offered three circulator routes connecting Johnson County cities throughout this summer’s matches, watch parties, community events and FIFA Fan Festival™ activities. As of July 9, the Link service had 1,418 riders.

Passengers report positive experiences

Airport Drop and Ride passengers who participated in surveys about their experience with this pilot service have reported strongly positive sentiment so far. Of 516 riders surveyed as of July 7, 95.5% rated their experience as “excellent” and 97.1% said they were “very likely” to recommend the service to someone else.

Surveyed passengers cited comfortable and clean buses, ease of use and on-time buses as factors that worked well during their trips.
