No. You will be paid your same salary while you attend academy training.
No. We utilize a seniority-based bid system. However, you will bid for your building (we have two), days off and shift preferences so will have many options available.

Everyone starts their career in detention. After your probationary period (one year) and becoming academy certified, you are able to begin putting in for divisional transfers such as patrol, civil, court security, etc. Each division has their own competitive process that may consist of an interview, scenarios, geographical testing, radio procedures and/or a separate physical fitness standard.

The JCSO does not have corrections officers as most Sheriff's Office's do. In Kansas Corrections officers can be hired at 18 years of age, however you must be 21 years of age before you are allowed to become a deputy. Our Sheriff has a philosophy of being able to mobilize numerous staff members at any given time in order to support the needs of our community, neighboring communities and assist other law enforcement agencies.
