K-State Olathe Fills Manufacturing Gap with Launch of North America’s First Bulk Solids Technology Center

Bulk solid materials comprise more than 80% of items transported globally. They are central to food, pharmaceutical, plastics and chemical manufacturing. For decades, manufacturers had nowhere to turn for university-level research, testing or workforce training in bulk solids. That gap is now closing, right here in Johnson County.

Kansas State University Olathe recently opened the Bulk Solids Technology Center, the anchor of its new Advanced Manufacturing Hub and the only university-centered facility of its kind in North America. The state-of-the-art center, equipped for powder handling, storage, conveying and air filtration, is already serving manufacturers and learners across the Greater Kansas City region.

A $5 million federal infusion
K-State Olathe recently secured $5 million in federal funding for additional hub equipment, further expanding its training capabilities. U.S. Rep. Sharice Davids and U.S. Sen. Jerry Moran championed the investment.

“This investment represents a major milestone for K-State Olathe,” said Ben Wolfe, dean and CEO. “It will strengthen our ability to support workforce development through both credit and noncredit programming, deliver tangible research solutions to address industry challenges and expand engagement with industry partners in high-growth sectors.”

For Kansas City-area residents, the hub opens more accessible pathways into high-demand, well-paying manufacturing careers. For businesses already operating in the metro, it means a world-class resource for workforce development and applied research in their own backyard. And for companies considering where to locate or expand, it is a clear signal that Johnson County is serious about advanced manufacturing.

The importance of bulk solids training
Formal training in bulk solids – dry, flowable materials like powders, granules and pellets – has been scarce. Poor understanding of how these materials behave costs manufacturers significant time and money. The K-State Olathe Bulk Solids Technology Center provides manufacturers and workers with education and lab training needed to keep their production operations running smoothly.

Training and education options for all learners
The Advanced Manufacturing Hub will meet learners wherever they are in their careers. Designed for immediate workplace application, K-State Olathe offers noncredit professional development courses that pair classroom instruction with lab work. These short courses are already drawing manufacturing workers from across the region.

Beginning in fall 2026, the campus will launch certificate programs in Applied Electronics and Industrial Automation, with hands-on time in the Advanced Manufacturing Hub’s labs built into the curriculum. Students can also combine those certificates with transfer credits and leadership coursework to complete a Bachelor of Science in Applied and Interdisciplinary Studies, establishing a seamless pathway from short courses to degree completion.

The facility is supported in part by JCERT, which has long invested in connecting K-State Olathe with the region’s workforce and economic development needs.
