K-State Olathe Student Tackles One of Agriculture’s Most Pressing Challenges, Ensuring Regional Sustainability

Through her graduate work in the animal science program at K-State Olathe, Paula Ruiz Gonzalez is bringing together education and innovation to address challenges faced by cattle producers, businesses and communities.

A graduate research assistant and master’s student in the animal science program with an emphasis in nutritional health, Paula Ruiz Gonzalez is working on a project with real stakes for the agriculture industry: reducing methane emissions in stocker cattle without hurting profits. Her project supports the long-term sustainability and competitiveness of the agriculture industry, which is a critical economic driver for the region.
Through the JCERT-supported degree, Ruiz Gonzalez is bringing together education and innovation to address challenges faced by cattle producers, businesses and communities.
Research at the intersection of environment and efficiency
Reducing greenhouse gas emissions from cattle is one of agriculture’s defining challenges. Doing it without sacrificing stocker performance requires rigorous scientific research, the kind Ruiz Gonzalez is building through her coursework and hands-on experience as a graduate research assistant.
“I want to use research and data-driven decision-making to help cattle producers improve animal welfare and sustainability,” she said. “Ultimately, I hope my education allows me to bridge the gap between research and practical application in agriculture.”
Her work sits at the intersection of animal welfare, environmental responsibility and production efficiency – priorities that resonate well beyond the classroom.
Developing practical, transferable skills
Ask Ruiz Gonzalez what has surprised her most about graduate school and the answer isn’t the science. It’s the statistics.
Through her coursework, she has learned that working with data is as much a mindset as it is a technical skill. That shift has made her a more effective researcher as someone who can interpret results, engage in scientific discussions and make an immediate, meaningful impact.
“I’ve also become more comfortable communicating scientific ideas clearly and asking deeper questions during discussions,” she said.
Those skills help Ruiz Gonzalez translate research data from the lab into practice.
From the classroom to the field
For Ruiz Gonzalez, the most energizing part of her program is seeing the interconnectivity of her research. What she learns in one space, she applies in another.
She is early in her program, but the commitment she made – relocation and starting a new chapter – reflects the kind of initiative that advanced education requires and rewards.
“Taking that step felt like a breakthrough in both personal and professional growth,” she said. “This passion, combined with my desire to grow professionally in this field, made this program the ideal choice for me.”
Education that strengthens the region
