"Cancer research goes beyond discovering effective treatments - it encompasses prevention, early detection, better diagnostics, supportive care and improving quality of life." -Sandy Annis, BA, CCRP

Cancer breakthroughs rely on a sophisticated, behind-the-scenes process that enables research to thrive. At The University of Kansas Cancer Center, Sandy Annis, BA, CCRP, oversees this intricate process. For her, this work is personal. Having experienced cancer’s impact within her own family, she is motivated by the opportunity to drive meaningful change. Every trial is a chance to improve a participant’s quality of life, bring hope to families and move closer to better treatments.

As the executive director of clinical operations for cancer clinical trials, Annis ensures each study is conducted smoothly, ethically and with a strong focus on patient care.

The Power of Teamwork

While many people view clinical trials as the work of doctors and researchers, success also depends on an array of other skilled experts working in sync. Annis oversees research coordinators, research assistants, the pre-screening team, the correlative lab and data teams. Her leadership ensures every clinical-trial patient is supported by these professionals, upholding the highest standards of care and compliance.

“Collaboration happens through interdisciplinary teamwork, stakeholder engagement and mentorship,” she said. “It ensures efficient and cohesive operations.”

Whether she is mentoring staff, coordinating teams or working with outside stakeholders, Annis ensures that every piece of the complex clinical trial process moves forward.

Clinical Trials Advance All Aspects of Cancer Research

Many people think of clinical trials as the last step in finding a cure. That’s a common misconception, according to Annis.

“While discovering effective treatments is a significant aspect of cancer research, it encompasses much more,” Annis said. “It can also be about prevention, early detection, better diagnostics, supportive care and improving quality of life.”

Clinical trials play a vital role in all those advancements. They evaluate not only new therapies but also ways to reduce side effects, detect cancer earlier or tailor care more precisely to individuals. KU Cancer Center currently has more than 360 active/enrolling clinical trials being conducted at the University of Kansas Clinical Research Center, which is funded by JCERT.

“Every day, I have the opportunity to make a real impact on the lives of patients and their families,” Annis said. “Knowing that our efforts contribute to the progress against cancer and bring us closer to finding effective treatments makes this work incredibly fulfilling. It motivates me to strive for excellence every day.”
