Johnson County Library welcomes the world this summer
Kansas City will be on a global stage when FIFA World Cup 2026™ arrives, and Johnson County Library is preparing to meet the moment. Across 14 locations, the Library is offering visitors and residents a place to cool off, recharge and connect with programs, technology and services designed for a busy, international summer.

The Library makes it easy because visitors and residents can return borrowed materials at any branch, as well as the Olathe Public Library locations. Residents can also use one Library card to access materials, digital services and physical locations across both systems, making returns easy across city lines.
Tad Twidwell, the Library’s physical security systems manager, said the goal was to build on existing strengths. “How can we optimize what we already do to engage with the event itself? We looked at how each department could make the experience meaningful for visitors,” he said.
A summer built around soccer
The Library’s annual Summer Reading Program has a twist this year with the theme “Read, Score, Roar!” Expect soccer-inspired displays, activities and events that connect reading with the energy of FIFA World Cup 2026™ Kansas City.
Programs throughout the summer include watch parties with pregame activities, world language meetups and cultural events highlighting food, music and traditions from participating countries. Younger visitors can take part in soccer Storytimes with HappyFeet KC, blending books, movement and basic soccer skills for toddlers and preschoolers.
Tools for a global audience
To better serve international visitors and multilingual residents, each branch will offer Pocketalk devices – handheld tools that provide real-time, two-way translation in more than 90 languages. Staff can use them during any interaction when translation is needed, helping ensure clear and welcoming service. The Library is also working to provide how-to guides for basic services in multiple languages and has added a translation tool to its website.
Free Wi-Fi, public computers and comfortable spaces offer a break from the heat and crowds.
Visitors will also notice practical upgrades. Many branches now feature secure phone charging lockers. Set a PIN, leave your device and return to a full charge. Increased bandwidth, improved audiovisual systems and clearer digital signage make it easier to check scores, follow matches and navigate busy buildings.
A welcoming stop
Several branches, including Central Resource, Oak Park and Lenexa City Center, are conveniently located near key transit hubs, making them easy stops for visitors traveling throughout the region. Library staff can also help connect visitors to transit options through ConnectKC26 and planning guides from KC2026.
