Mental Health First Aid is an interactive 8-hour course that gives people the skills to help someone who is developing a mental health problem or experiencing a mental health crisis. The evidence behind the program demonstrates that it builds mental health literacy and helps the public identify, understand, and respond to signs of mental illness. Participants are introduced to risk factors and warning signs of mental health problems, gain an understanding of their impact, and explore common interventions and treatments.

Mental Health First Aid is intended for all people and organizations that make up the fabric of a community. The course is often presented to chambers of commerce, professional associations, hospitals, nursing homes, service organizations, parent organizations, social clubs, and other groups. Any individuals who interact regularly with groups within their community (police officers, human resource directors, and primary care workers) would benefit from MHFA. Additionally, school and college staff and administration, faith communities, as well as family and friends of individuals with mental illness will develop useful skills and gain valuable insight. Mental Health First Aid can benefit anyone interested in learning more about mental health problems, including depression, anxiety, psychosis and substance abuse.
