Watercraft Purchases and Sales

All vessels powered by motor (gasoline, diesel, or electric), or sail, must be registered and numbered. The State of Kansas does not, however, title watercraft, nor does it register or title motors. Some Boat purchases require sales tax to be paid at the Motor Vehicle office prior to registering them with the park office. Please see our frequently asked questions for more information.

Boat Purchases - Frequently Asked Questions

You do not need to visit the motor vehicle office and can visit the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks online, in person or by mail to register your boat.

You must pay sales tax before registering your boat.

  • If you bought your boat from a Kansas Dealer, as a Kansas resident, Sales tax was collected, and you should have received the STD-8 form (sales tax receipt). This is what you would provide to Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks
  • If you bought your boat from an out of state dealer, take your invoice or bill of sale to the County Treasurer's Office in the county you plan to store your boat to receive a Sales Tax Paid receipt. If stored in Johnson County, please take to either of our motor vehicle offices Mission Motor Vehicle Office or Olathe Motor Vehicle Office. You will need to bring in the title, MCO and bill of sale for the watercraft and motor (if applicable).

When selling your boat, please notify the Kansas Department of Wildlife & Parks at the information below so it can be listed as SOLD.
