Metcalf Corridor Fast and Frequent Transit Study

Metcalf Corridor Fast and Frequent Transit

Johnson County is planning fast and frequent bus service to your favorite destinations along the Metcalf corridor — Downtown Overland Park, Mission Transit Center, Johnson County Community College, Indian Creek Trail, and even the Country Club Plaza to connect with the KC Streetcar and other regional destinations.

This summer, a project team of planning experts from Johnson County, the City of Overland Park, and local consultants are developing a plan that could make it happen as early as 2026.

This more detailed plan is the next step after Johnson County’s Transit Strategic Plan, which recommends more frequent service on Metcalf as a first step.

Transit Metcalf Survey Priorities

Survey Results

Based on survey data collected from more than 300 respondents in June 2025, five priorities rose to the surface:

  • Faster Travel Times
  • More Frequent Service
  • On-Time Arrival
  • Reach Priority Destinations
  • Weekend Service

The project team is currently in the process of applying these priorities to their fast and frequent service recommendations. Thank you to everyone who took the time to participate in the survey.

What is the Plan Timeline?

Metcalf Corridor Fast and Frequent Transit: Timeline

Who is doing the plan?

Johnson County is leading this plan with support from the City of Overland Park as they recognize the importance of improving bus service along the Metcalf corridor, and its impact on the entire region. Together with the Mid-America Regional Council, they selected transportation experts TransPro Consulting, GFT (formerly TranSystems), Lynchpin Ideas and EverStrive Solutions to assist with the study.

Who is funding the plan?

The Metcalf Corridor Fast and Frequent Transit Study is one of 17 projects across the region chosen for funding through the Mid-America Regional Council’s Planning Sustainable Places Program. The PSP Program provides local governments with financial support to advance detailed local planning and project development activities in support of Creating Sustainable Places, Connected KC 2050’s Activity Centers and Corridors framework, and the Mid-America Regional Council’s adopted policy statement on regional land use direction.
