Johnson County Transit has kicked-off its Transit Strategic Plan process. It will be a roadmap for the future focused on clearly articulating JCT’s vision, strategic direction and the methods necessary to achieve these goals.
The process will include extensive public outreach, including input from Johnson County’s Board of County Commissioners, users of the system, the Johnson County Transportation Council and the broader Johnson County community in this planning effort. Engagement will focus on effectively giving the community a voice through collaborative and inclusive discussions.
To gather public input, we will meet people where they are at interactive pop-up facilitations during already scheduled community events. Dates and times of public engagement opportunities will be posted here once available.
Join us under the clock tower at the Overland Park Farmers Market on Saturday, October 5th, from 10 a.m. to noon for a special pop-up event! This is part of our strategic plan, and we’re gathering input to help shape the future of public transit in Johnson County. Stop by to learn more, share your feedback and be a part of the conversation on improving local transit.
We’re conducting a community-wide, statistically valid survey to gather feedback from Johnson County residents—whether you’re a current, past, or non-rider. Your input will help us understand community attitudes, gauge support for public transit, and identify key priorities and areas for improvement.
Please take the survey today and help shape the future of transit in our region. The survey will close on Oct. 23.
The Johnson County Transit Strategic Plan is scheduled to finalize the plan for adoption in early 2025.

Bus (RideKC Bus) - Local Express, and Commuter Routes: These bus routes operate on set schedules along specific paths, providing transportation across various areas. Local routes serve nearby destinations with frequent stops, while express routes offer faster travel by making fewer stops and using direct routes. Commuter routes cater to passengers traveling from suburban or rural areas into the city or major employment centers, primarily during peak hours. Currently, all these services are free to use in the region.
Shared Ride Micro-Transit (RideKC Micro Transit): This is a flexible, on-demand transit service where multiple passengers share a ride (similar to Uber Pool or Lyft Shared). Fares are based on the distance traveled, making it a cost-effective option for varying trip lengths.
Non-ADA Paratransit Service (RideKC Freedom): A specialized curb-to-curb transportation service for county residents with disabilities that limit their ability to use other modes of transit or for residents over 65. This service operates inside Johnson County, with connections to KCMO and KCKS, and is exclusive to county residents. Johnson County offers a scheduled service Monday-Friday that is currently free to use, along with an on-demand option that has a distance-based fare.
