Eviction Mediation Program

About the Eviction Mediation Program

An eviction mediation program has been developed in the 10th Judicial District. This program makes mediation mandatory if a tenant disagrees with the landlord’s eviction filing.

This page has resources for if you have been served an eviction, or if you have questions around eviction or the mediation program.

What is mediation?

Mediation is a chance for a landlord and tenant to meet with a neutral third party. This trained person helps them discuss the issues and try to reach an agreement.

In Johnson County, mediations predominately happen in person. Mediations are generally confidential. This means the mediator will usually not share what was said during the mediation. The mediator only shared the agreement reached.

When does mediation occur?

In Johnson County, mediation happens on our assigned court date, after denial at your appearance docket.

Who is a mediator?

All mediators are approved dispute resolution providers. The guidelines for approval are in the Kansas Supreme Court rules.

Case study available

Extensive data collection and analysis about the Eviction Mediation Program's outcomes are available in a case study, published in Sept. 2025. The document outlines how the program was established, the policies it relies on, and how various systems work together to make it possible.
