Adult Crisis Stabilization Center

Now open for walk-in services and referrals, Johnson County Mental Health Center's Adult Crisis Stabilization Center is a 24-hour, 14-bed crisis observation and stabilization program providing care and treatment for adults in Johnson County experiencing a behavioral health crisis. The residential program is housed at The Recovery Place in Shawnee, Kansas.

The average length of stay at the Adult Crisis Stabilization Center is 3-5 days, but can extend up to 10 days based on an individual's needs.

Adults experiencing a behavioral health crisis can walk in any time at the Adult Crisis Stabilization Center, but calling ahead is encouraged to ensure a bed is available.

Referrals to the Adult Crisis Stabilization Center can be made by any member of the community, including law enforcement, medical providers and mental health professionals. Adults can also refer themselves by calling ahead or walking in any time.

Clients who are already receiving services through Johnson County Mental Health Center should be referred by their treatment team.

Adult Crisis Stabilization Center staff will work with the person making the referral or the person being referred to ensure care at the ACSC is the most appropriate option.

Admission Criteria

The Adult Crisis Stabilization Center is open to anyone meeting these criteria for admission:

  • 18 years of age and older
  • Experiencing a behavioral health crisis
  • Capable of self-care and not in need of major medical care
  • No verbal or physical aggression
  • Voluntary participation in treatment

Care, Treatment and Accommodations

The Adult Crisis Stabilization Center provides a safe, stable and trauma-informed environment to help adults stabilize a behavioral health crisis. Each person is provided a semi-private room with a bathroom, bedding and towels. Meals are served at the ACSC.

During a stay, here's what a person seeking care and treatment at the ACSC can expect:

  • Meeting with a clinician and a case manager to develop an individualized recovery plan, including coping skills, referrals to continuing care and connections to community-based support groups.
  • Attending group therapy sessions throughout the day during a stay.
  • If appropriate, meeting with a psychiatric provider.

Adults who have recently used substances may be referred to another JCMHC program housed at The Recovery Place, the Adult Detoxification Unit.

The Recovery Place is a tobacco-free campus. Nicotine replacement therapy options are available.
