Developmental Supports

Project SEARCH is an internship program offered by Johnson County Developmental Supports for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Through the program, interns participate in three different internship locations as well as attend classes where they learn about general life and employment skills such as setting goals, budgeting, applying for jobs, self advocacy and taking on adult responsibilities. At the end of the program, Project SEARCH helps interns find competitive jobs.

District Attorney's Office

The District Attorney’s Office has legal internships available to students enrolled in an accredited law school, who are eligible to obtain their Rule 715 license. Interns are selected during an application process that starts fall of their 2L year during OCIS. Those interested should apply then. Interns selected are assigned to the office’s Adult Criminal or Juvenile/CINC units. Under a rule 715 license, interns will appear in court, draft motions and manage cases. This is an opportunity for legal students to get paid for public service work while building trial advocacy skills.

Emergency Management

Johnson County Emergency Management provides internships for those interested in a career in emergency management. A paid summer internship gives interns a hands-on experience with Johnson County’s emergency preparedness efforts, from severe weather planning and response to managing the county’s alert systems.

Health and Environment

The Johnson County Department of Health and Environment offers unpaid student internships to help with skill development and experience in public health. Internships with JCDHE are available to undergraduate and graduate students and focus on the areas of community health, nursing, epidemiology and more. Note: The program is full for the spring 2025 term as Health and Environment works on updating its application process to better serve students. The new process will launch in summer 2025 and will be available to students from affiliated academic institutions.

Medical Examiner's Office

The Johnson County Medical Examiner’s Office offers unpaid internships to college students, pathology assistant students, medical students and pathology residents. Interns observe and assist in limited capacity with autopsies, accompany medicolegal death investigators to scenes and more. Note: The program is full for the spring 2025 term as the Medical Examiner's Office works on updating its application process to better serve students. The new process will launch in summer 2025.

Mental Health

Johnson County Mental Health Center offers internships through its Field Experience Program – including undergraduate and graduate-level field experiences in both clinical and non-clinical disciplines. The purpose of the program is to provide students with relevant training and work experience while the Mental Health Center continues to provide high-quality care.

Sheriff's Office

The Johnson County Sheriff’s Office has unpaid summer internships available to college students pursuing a career in law enforcement. Interns will get hands-on experience with law enforcement operations, exploring the divisions of Detention, Patrol, Communications, Court Security and Training. Additionally, the Sheriff’s Office offers internships at its Crime Lab.

Stormwater

The Johnson County Stormwater Management Program within Public Works has a summer internship program for undergraduate students in the fields of engineering, environmental science, earth sciences, and/or local government administration. Through the program, interns explore topics such as water quality, stormwater pollution, mapping and more.

Wastewater

Johnson County Wastewater offers internships to those interested in a career in wastewater or the water sector. Student internships help high school and college students get hands-on experience working in the public sector, specifically at a wastewater utility. Additionally, non-student internships support recent graduates or community members who are interested in working in a new profession.

Wastewater also offers job shadowing opportunities. Job shadows will provide participants with a realistic job preview and help them determine if a career in wastewater meets their skill set and goals.
