Sunset Community Garden

Established in May 2013, the Johnson County Sunset Community Garden and Orchard (formerly the WIC Garden) aims to educate, empower and feed the community.

This quarter-acre fruit and vegetable farm space is located next to the Johnson County Department of Health and Environment, 11875 S. Sunset Drive in Olathe, Kansas.

About the Sunset Community Garden

Volunteer gardeners work in a vegetable garden

The garden is managed by Johnson County K-State Research and Extension in partnership with JCDHE along with volunteer support from county employees and community members who donate their time weekly to seed, hoe, prune, stake, mulch, harvest and more depending on the season.

Produce from the garden is distributed to locations in the county to provide free produce to those who need it. A cooler, located in JCDHE's Olathe lobby, stores fresh produce for JCDHE clients and members of the community.

The garden produces between 3,000 and 4,000 pounds of produce each year – a mix of nutritious fruits and vegetables. Produce grown in the garden includes:

  • Apples
  • Basil
  • Blackberries
  • Cucumbers
  • Green peppers
  • Jalapeno peppers
  • Kale
  • Peaches
  • Pears
  • Potatoes
  • Strawberries
  • Sweet corn
  • Sweet potatoes
  • Tomato

Volunteering at the Sunset Community Garden

Workdays are on Tuesdays based on the time of year and weather patterns. All times are subject to change based on weather. Please contact the office to confirm work times. Drop-ins are welcome, but registration for workdays is encouraged. Workdays will be canceled in case of inclement weather.

  • Mid-March through Memorial Day: 8 a.m.
  • Memorial Day through Labor Day: 7:30 a.m.
  • Labor Day through end of season: 8 a.m.

Volunteering at the garden is a great way to learn about growing food, socialize with others, get physical activity and contribute to a good cause. No special equipment required. Tools are supplied, but it's recommended that participants bring closed-toe shoes, a bottle of water, sunscreen and their favorite pair of gardening gloves. No prior gardening knowledge is necessary.

Sunset Community Garden Farmers Market

Johnson County K-State Research and Extension and JCDHE hold farmers market events throughout the growing season at the Sunset Community Garden to provide produce to those in the community who need it. These events are open to the public and produce is available with a suggested donation. All proceeds go toward maintaining the garden (and growing more produce to share).

See the schedule of upcoming farmers market events.
