Frequently Asked Questions

What types of documents should I shred?

The most common types of documents recommended for shredding contain sensitive financial, medical, or personally identifiable information (PII). By shredding these things, you protect against identity theft, fraud, and data breaches. These types of information are often targeted by criminals because they can be used to steal someone’s identity, access bank accounts, or commit fraud.

Other documents that might also need shredding include old contracts, employment records, legal papers, and anything else that could potentially be used to access personal or financial information.

Do I need to remove staples and paper clips?

No, you do not need to remove staples and paper clips before shredding.  The shredding blades are strong enough to cut through staples, paper clips, and other small fasteners without causing damage to the machine. These items will be shredded along with the paper, ensuring that your documents are securely destroyed.

However, it’s worth noting that excessive metal objects, such as large binder clips or other large fasteners, should be removed, as they could potentially jam the shredder or affect its performance.

What are the legal requirements for shredding?

Legal requirements for shredding are governed by various federal privacy laws designed to protect sensitive personal, financial, and health-related information.  We recommend you consult your legal department or advisors to understand specific requirements.

What happens to the shredded paper?

Once paper is shredded, it is collected and sent to a local facility in Kansas City for further processing. The facility is a specialized recycling center that handles materials like shredded paper and turns them into usable resources.

This helps reduce the environmental impact of paper waste by ensuring that paper materials are recycled and reused instead of being sent to landfills. This process also conserves natural resources and energy, making it an essential part of sustainable waste management and the recycling industry.

What are the benefits of shredding?

Shredding plays a crucial role in enhancing data security by significantly reducing the risk of data breaches. It ensures that sensitive information is securely destroyed, preventing unauthorized access or misuse. Additionally, shredding helps protect your business’s reputation by demonstrating a commitment to confidentiality and data protection.

Can we shred a hard-drive?

Unfortunately, we do not offer hard drive shredding services. While shredding paper documents is an effective way to protect sensitive information, hard drives require a more specialized approach, such as physical destruction or data wiping, to ensure that all data is fully and securely erased.
