Steps to stay healthy through the holidays
The holiday season is a time for gathering with loved ones, sharing meals and making memories. For older adults, it’s also a time to pay special attention to your health so you can fully enjoy the celebrations.
Stay up to date on vaccines
Vaccinations are one of the most effective ways to reduce your risk of serious illness. This season, talk to your healthcare provider about the flu shot, updated COVID-19 booster and the RSV vaccine. These vaccines can help reduce your risk of hospitalization and complications such as pneumonia.
The Johnson County Department of Health and Environment’s walk-in clinics in Olathe (11875 S. Sunset Drive) and Mission (6000 Lamar Ave.) offer all these vaccines and more. Visit jocogov.org/jcdhe for clinic hours and information.
If you or someone you care for is unable to travel due to limited mobility, JCDHE’s outreach nurses can bring flu and seasonal vaccines to your home. This convenient service is available to Johnson County residents only. Call 913-826-1221 to schedule a home visit.
Healthy holiday habits
Enjoy seasonal treats in moderation while keeping a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, lean proteins and whole grains. Hydrate with water, even in colder months when you may not feel as thirsty. Regular physical activity, like daily walks or light stretching, strengthens your immune system and boosts overall well-being.
Protect yourself and others
Wash your hands often, especially before meals and after being in public. If you feel unwell, it’s best to stay home to recover and avoid spreading illness. At-home COVID-19 tests are widely available from local and online retailers and can guide decisions about treatment and precautions.
Prevent falls
Holiday decorating and busy households can create extra clutter that increases the risk of falls. Keep walkways clear by moving packages, decorations and everyday items off the floor.
When hanging decorations, ask a family member or friend for help instead of climbing on a ladder or step stool. Tuck electrical cords out of sight to reduce tripping hazards.
Outdoors, enlist neighbors or relatives to help clear ice and snow from driveways and sidewalks.
Inside the home, choose sturdy, non-slip footwear instead of socks, and look for shoes with rubber soles for added stability. Small adjustments like these can make your home safer and keep you steady on your feet throughout the season.
Rest and recharge
Holiday schedules can be busy, but don’t neglect rest. A good night’s sleep keeps your immune system strong and helps manage stress. Take time to relax so you don’t get overextended. It’s OK to say no to too many commitments. With preparation and care, you can celebrate the season in good health and good spirits.
