Libraries add blood pressure monitors

There’s a new kind of “reading” happening at Johnson County Library, and this one could save lives. Thanks to a partnership with the American Heart Association and HCA Midwest Health, blood pressure monitors are now available at 10 of the Library’s 14 branches.
“Libraries are a place where the community comes together,” said Jared Harper, southwest regional manager for the Library. “These blood pressure monitors are another opportunity to give people – many who might be underinsured or without medical resources – a chance to get some help.”
According to the AHA, nearly half of all American adults, about 120 million people, have high blood pressure, often called the “silent killer” because many are unaware they have it. Left unchecked, it can lead to stroke, heart disease and kidney problems.
Placing monitors in libraries is part of a nationwide effort by the AHA to meet people where they are. Harper says it fits naturally with the Library’s mission to provide a safe, welcoming place for resources and support.
The monitors are free, easy to use and completely private. “These machines store nothing,” Harper explained. “They aren’t connected to the internet or any network. The only thing they track is how many times they have been used.”
Patrons have already seen the benefits. Some have even discovered health issues that led them to follow up with their doctors. Nearby notebooks offer tips for accurate readings, blood pressure management and heart health education in both English and Spanish. Each reading prints for the user’s records and is automatically erased afterward to protect privacy.
Stann Tate, president of the Johnson County Library Foundation Board, helped bring the partnership to life.
“I enjoy sharing with people that libraries are more than just a place with books. Our libraries are centers of information, education, creativity and community resources,” he said.
