Center celebrates winter solstice

Toasting marshmallows over a fire

A Winter Solstice Celebration will take place on Dec. 20 at Ernie Miller Nature Center, 909 N. K-7 Highway, Olathe.

Activities will include a walk through the woods along little Cedar Creek. The trails will be lit by luminaries.

Participants can warm up by the fireside, listen to stories about the longest night of the year, visit live owls and discover animal mysteries of survival during the long winter and enjoy campfire treats of toasted marshmallows.

Five time slots are available, 4:30 p.m., 5 p.m., 5:30 p.m., 6 p.m. or 6:30 p.m. Each program lasts two hours from the chosen start time.

Please note: This program will be outdoors along approximately one mile of paved trails which include some steep slopes. Participants are asked to dress for the weather and check in at Ernie Miller Park Shelter #2.

Cost is $12 per person, $13 nonresidents. Advance online registration is required at JCPRD.com/register.
