Apply now for property tax relief for low-income seniors, disabled vets
By Andy Hyland
The application window is now open for Johnson County qualifying seniors 65 and older to apply for relief payments up to the value of the county’s portion of property taxes.
The program is also available to qualifying veterans with disabilities.
New this year, there will no longer be a $200 limit on the relief payment for qualifying applicants. Recipients may receive up to the entire amount of the Johnson County portion on their property tax bill.
The application window is open now and will stay open through April 15. Those interested in applying can learn more about the application forms and how to submit them at jocogov.org/JoCoSeniorVeteranTaxRelief.
Residents will need to provide proof of income and documentation of military disability, if applicable. In order to receive a property tax relief payment, participants in the program must:
- Be a resident of Johnson County
- Own and occupy their home
- Be age 65 or older, OR be a disabled veteran with a service-connected disability
- Have a home with a maximum 2024 appraised value of $384,600
- Be current on property tax payments for their residence
- Be at or below the Very Low Income limits set by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development
This past summer, the county gave more than $40,000 in relief payments to 207 qualifying applicants. In October, the Board of County Commissioners removed the $200 limit to encourage more applications and increase assistance to some of our most vulnerable residents.
Residents who would qualify for this program may also qualify for other programs to receive relief on their property tax bills as well. Some Johnson County cities offer programs to their residents. Check your city’s website to see if a program is available.
Additional information on other state programs is available to Johnson County residents at jocogov.org/propertytaxrelief or call 913-715-2638.
