April is National Volunteer Month, a time to recognize volunteers’ tremendous contributions to our communities.

This year’s theme, “Empowering Communities, Enriching Lives,” reflects the Aging and Human Services mission.

Our volunteers embody this spirit by supporting older adults, individuals with disabilities and families in need across Johnson County. From delivering meals to providing transportation and packing food pantry orders, their dedication empowers our clients to live healthier, more connected lives.

Dennis Jones is a shining example of this commitment. He began volunteering with AHS two years ago through the Catch-a- Ride program.

“I have been very fortunate to have better than average health for my age and consider myself somewhat athletic. I wanted to stay active with personal activities (golf, fishing, hunting) and Catch-a-Ride allowed me flexibility with my schedule,” he shared. “I enjoy brightening someone’s day. It’s been said that within a six-minute conversation with someone, you’ll find that you have something in common. I find that to be an absolute truth.”

Last fall, Dennis joined the SHICK (Senior Health Insurance Counseling for Kansas) volunteer program.

“I thought figuring out Medicare would be good for my brain, and I was not wrong,” he said.

Serving more than 50 hours last year, Dennis finds fulfillment in giving back.

“Volunteering makes me feel appreciated by those I help and the staff at AHS. In some small way, I feel I am making a difference,” he said.

His advice to retirees? “You get back more than you give. There is no such thing as total altruism.”
