Spotlight shines on Nutrition Center staff

In recognition of AHS’ 50th anniversary, AHS is spotlighting two of the longest-tenured Nutrition Program staff.
In June, Marcia Jennings celebrated 30 years of service, sharing: “Time flies when you’re having fun!”
Marcia worked at two different nutrition centers before moving to the Merriam Nutrition Center, where she has spent most of her career. She reflected on her time with the nutrition program, sharing, “It is the (homebound) seniors, (congregate) participants and (nutrition) center staff” that inspired her to stay for 30 years.
Her purpose in working for the nutrition program is “getting up every day knowing I have somewhere to be.” She also enjoys “remembering all the congregate participants that have come and gone.” Marcia hopes the Nutrition Program’s future brings growth as “the people are the most important part.”
After retirement in February of 1997, Gloria Hicks began volunteering with the Nutrition Program. When a paid position became available at the Spring Hill Nutrition Center, she applied, making her part of the AHS staff in October 1997.
Gloria discussed some of the highlights during her tenure at the Spring Hill Nutrition Center, reminiscing about serving meals out of steam tables to 35 participants, playing bingo and having a bus service that provided transportation for participants to the center.
“The program is good for the community,” she said. “The socialization is an important part. The program helps the homebound. It gives them someone to see and chat with.”
She has been an integral part of the Spring Hill community since moving there in 1968. “I’ve enjoyed my time here,” Gloria added.
Residents are always invited to have a meal with Gloria Hicks at the Spring Hill Nutrition Center or Marcia Jennings at the Merriam Nutrition Center.
Meals are served at 11:30 a.m. Monday-Friday. Reservations must be made by 10 a.m. the day before and are available to anyone age 60 or older and their spouse.
