A new sheriff and newly elected member of the Johnson County Board of Commissioners along with two re-elected county commissioners and district attorney will take the oath of office during a swearing-in ceremony at 9 a.m. Monday, Jan. 13, in the board’s hearing room.
Byron Roberson is the first Democrat sheriff elected in Johnson County in more than 90 years. He is also the first Black sheriff in county history. Roberson joined the Prairie Village Police Department in 1995 and has served as police chief since 2021. He was elected to serve a 4-year term.
Steve Howe, Lenexa, was re-elected to his fifth 4-year term as Johnson County district attorney. He joined the District Attorney’s Office in 1991 as an assistant district attorney after serving in that role in Shawnee County for three years.
Julie Brewer, Overland Park, will become the new county commissioner representing the Third District for the next four years. She brings more than 30 years of leadership experience in both the nonprofit and for-profit sectors, most recently serving as the executive director of United Community Services of Johnson County until retiring in July 2023.
Re-elected county commissioners are Jeff Meyers, Shawnee, representing the Second District, and Shirley Allenbrand, Olathe, representing the Sixth District. Both are beginning their second 4-year terms.
The Honorable Charles Droege, chief judge of the Tenth Judicial District Court, will administer the oath of office individually to the newly elected and re-elected officials. As part of the proceedings, each official will be introduced by a person of his or her choosing.
The ceremony will be livestreamed on boccmeetings.jocogov.org and YouTube.
Johnson County Government thanks outgoing Third District County Commissioner Charlotte O’Hara, who served one 4-year term, and Sheriff Calvin Hayden, who served two 4-year terms, for their years of public service.
