BOCC gets update on public health related to COVID-19

At today’s Board of County Commissioners meeting, the agenda included an update from Johnson County Department of Health and Environment Director Dr. Sanmi Areola and Epidemiologist Elizabeth Holzschuh. They discussed:

  • The latest numbers of positive and negative cases, recovery rates and deaths in the county as a total and specifically in long-term care facilities.
  • A plan to release guidance to long-term care facilities as they begin to reopen to visitors.
  • New COVID-19 testing opportunities.

During an afternoon study session, the BOCC and staff discussed a proposed distribution process for CARES Act funding. Johnson County Government has received more than $116 million and expects to receive an additional $8 million based on our number of COVID-19 cases and our unemployment rate.

The county plans to allocate funding in a phased approach to:

  1. Local taxing jurisdictions, such as cities.
  2. Public and private entities under the umbrella of community reinvestment.
  3. A contingency fund.
