Thank you for your interest in volunteering!  Johnson County government offers several opportunities to get involved with your community. Volunteering is one of the best ways to get connected and make a difference. Listed, at the top of the page is specific information about each department volunteer program. Staff and volunteers form a partnership working toward a common goal of helping offenders reintegrate back into the community as law-abiding citizens. State Seal Johnson County Court Services has several volunteer positions for adults and youth. The Supervised Visitation Program which provides safe, supportive, and consistent visitation for children and their non-residential parent utilizes adult volunteers. The success of the 12 week program depends on volunteers who have a desire to help families and children and are willing to provide supervision and observation for one hour on Tuesday evenings at the Johnson County Courthouse. Johnson County Youth Court utilizes youth volunteers (10 – 17) who participate in the roles of prosecuting and defense attorneys, judges, jury members, bailiffs and panel members to take part in hearings of first time misdemeanor offenders and truant youth. JCDS Logo Developmental Supports is an agency that facilitates career and personal development for Johnson County residents with developmental disabilities. State Seal The District Attorney's Office utilizes volunteers primarily to meet the needs of victims involved in the criminal justice system. To volunteer to help others, you must be over the age of 18, have a minimum of six hours a week to volunteer, no criminal history, and are able to work with issues of a confidential and sensitive nature. After completing an application, which will include references and a criminal background check, you will be contacted by the Volunteer Coordinator for an interview. Extensive training on the criminal justice system will take place upon your selection as a volunteer. Our volunteers assist in providing essential human services as a safety net for older adults, those with a disability, and low-income families to help support their independence, dignity, and self sufficiency. We have ten volunteer program areas such as Meals on Wheels drivers, Catch-a-Ride drivers, food pantry volunteers, office administration and much more. Whether you want to work behind the scenes or be directly involved with clients, Human Services has a place for you. Museum Logo If you enjoy history and interacting with the public, consider volunteering with the Johnson County Museum! Volunteers give tours of the 1950s All-Electric House, assist with visitor services and educational programs for school groups and the public, and work with museum collections. Whatever your interest, we have an opportunity for you to learn about Johnson County history and make a difference in the community. sheriff logo Volunteers for the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office are required to complete the Sheriff’s Office Citizens Academy program.  If interested in attending the Academy, you must reside in Johnson County, Kansas, and be at least eighteen (18) years of age, with no drug, domestic violence, or felony convictions or adjudications.  Applicants must pass a record and background check and provide personal reference information.  The application is posted on the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office website www.jocosheriff.org and approved applicants are placed on a waiting list for Academy class openings.  The Academy is a twelve (12) week program which meets every Tuesday evening from 6:00 pm to 9:30 pm.  Further information can be obtained by contacting Rita Jones at rita.jones@jocogov.org.
