Mental Health Center kicks off national transportation study

Research study

Johnson County Mental Health Center held a ribbon-cutting ceremony Wednesday to kick off a national transportation pilot study.

County officials were joined by representatives from UnitedHealthcare and Dartmouth College — who will lead a year-long research pilot that looks at how mental health clients get to work, school and medical appointments.

The transportation pilot program will look at two questions:

Cars in the Park event on Sept. 30 benefits Special Olympians

About 200 vehicles and 1,000 spectators are anticipated for the annual Cars in the Park car show from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 30, at The Theatre in the Park complex in Shawnee Mission Park.

Admission to Cars in the Park is free for spectators and concessions will be available. The Theatre in the Park is located in Shawnee Mission Park and is accessible via a separate entrance at 7710 Renner Road, Shawnee.

An award-winning fire safety education program created especially for children ages 3-5 will be held Saturday, Oct.  7, including breakfast, booths, drawings and a fascinating and entertaining look into the preschooler's perception of fire, the surprising frequency of children's misuse of fire, practical approaches to teach young children fire safety, and an introduction to the award-winning play safe! be safe! kit.

Find out on Saturday, Sept. 23 (National Car Seat Check Saturday) between 9 a.m.-12:30 p.m. at McCarthy Chevrolet Olathe's Service Dept. at 675 N. Rawhide. Trained car seat safety specialists will examine child car seats for proper use, installation, age/size appropriateness and will alert parents to any recalled products at this event. The free safety checks take approximately 30 minutes per seat. This is a great way for parents to make sure their children are buckled up right. 

Veterans Town Hall meeting set Sept. 27 at Johnson County library

Sponsored by the Kansas City Veterans Administration Medical Center (KCVAMC), a Veterans Town Hall meeting is scheduled from 6 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 27, in the Carmack Community Room at the Johnson County Central Resource Library, 9875 West 87th Street, Overland Park.

Discussion during the meeting will include updated details about the new outpatient clinic in Shawnee, expansion of KCVAMC services to be closer to local veterans and information on the VA Choice Program and suicide prevention.

Enjoy the outdoors by scheduling your group for a hayride through Heritage Park, 16050 Pflumm Road in Olathe or the beautiful Oak Ridge Parklands in Shawnee Mission Park, 7460 Ogg Road in Shawnee Mission.

The hayrides conclude with a warm campfire where marshmallows and apple cider await. The one-hour hayride and one-hour campfire are just $7 per person, and groups will need to reach an $80 minimum for their ride. Hayrides are available at Shawnee Mission Park seven days a week and Heritage Park on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
