Winter freeze brings oak leaf mite itch relief

Oak leaf mites have been plaguing residents for months, but the end might not be in sight, even with a hard freeze.

In some parts of the county the outbreak has been so severe that people have changed their daily routine in an attempt to cope. For weeks, those itching their way through the warm fall months have been hoping and praying for an end to the itch mite bites. 

Fall Citizens Academy program participants recognized

Fall Kids Book Sale starts

Starting Thursday, Nov. 17, the Friends of Johnson County Library launches its BIG Fall Kids Book Sale. A ginormous selection of children’s books will be available for purchase, including board books, picture books, chapter books, teen/young adult and more.

The sale takes place in the Carmack Community Room at the Central Resource Library during these times:

Nov. 15 is America Recycles Day

This year in Johnson County Department of Health and Environment (JCDHE) is hosting two local events:

Staying home alone class for adolescents offered Nov. 23

Staying Home Alone, a Johnson County Park and Recreation District course for kids age 10–14, prepares adolescents for the responsibilities of  staying home alone for short periods of time. The course covers: personal responsibilities, how to handle emergencies, basic first aid skills and activities to do alone. Participants will assemble their own lunch (food included in price) and participants will swim in the afternoon.

Voters approve funding for new courthouse & coroner facility

On Tuesday, Nov. 8, Johnson County voters approved a quarter-cent public safety sales tax to fund a new county courthouse and coroner facility. The county leadership has studied courthouse options over the past 15 years with recommendations for a new courthouse from numerous consultants, professional staff and citizen advisory groups. Funding the large project prevented the county from moving forward until now. Johnson County does not currently have a coroner facility; it uses a private lab in Wyandotte County.

County hosts 30th Annual Veterans Day observance
