Beware of tech support scam

Please beware of a tech support call scam which is currently underway in our region. You don’t want to be the next victim.

The call is from someone who claims to work for a well-known technology company (e.g. Microsoft or Google) and attempts to convince the victim that their computer is either being attacked, is attacking another computer, or is infected with viruses, and that the caller can remediate the problem. Victims who comply with the caller’s requests are highly likely to compromise their computer and experience monetary loss. 

Johnson County libraries available as cooling centers

Record-setting temperatures over the weekend are a reminder that citizens who need a place to cool down during hot days are encouraged to visit one of the Johnson County Library’s 13 branches. All of these facilities will be available during normal business hours. 

Blue Star Museum offers free admission

Starting with May 29 through Labor Day (Sept. 3), Johnson County Museum, as one of more than 2,000 museums across America will participate in the ninth annual Blue Star Museums, a program that offers free admission to active duty military personnel and their families. The program is a collaboration among the National Endowment for the Arts, Blue Star Families, the U.S. Department of Defense and participating museums.

Ribbon cutting for Shawnee Mission Park beach house set for May 26

A ribbon cutting event on Saturday, May 26, will open the new beach house at Shawnee Mission Park and start the summer season with a free admission day.

The event, which will include comments from public officials, a DJ and giveaways, will begin at noon. In addition, a free lunch of hot dogs, chips, water and cookies will be provided. 

Summer fun for kids: Johnson County extension cooking day camp

Campers ages 7 – 12 will gain skills in food safety, preparation and nutrition, and enjoy dining on their culinary creations through this hands-on series. Camp is held from 9 a.m. – noon each day at the extension office, 11811 S. Sunset Drive in Olathe. (Note: There are two sessions this year. Both sessions will feature the same recipes and activities. Please only sign up for one session to allow more youth the chance to participate in this exciting camp.) Registration is $50 per session. Registration deadline June 12.

Johnson County approves purchase of new voting machines

Johnson County Board of County Commissioners unanimously approved a recommendation from Election Commissioner Ronnie Metsker to purchase 2,100 new voting machines for a total cost of approximately $10.5 million.

“These new machines will provide a voter verifiable paper audit trail,” Metsker said. “This allows individuals to see a record of their votes on paper before they cast their ballot and it allows the county to maintain paper records of every vote.”

JoCo named Stepping Up Innovator County

Stepping Up

Johnson County was selected as one of seven counties in the nation as a Stepping Up Innovator County for its expertise in taking actions to reduce the number of people in jail who experience mental illness.

As an Innovator County, Johnson County’s efforts will be highlighted as part of a new push from Stepping Up: A National Initiative to Reduce the Number of People with Mental Illnesses in Jails to help counties consistently identify and collect data on this population.
