Bonds sold for new Johnson County Courthouse and Medical Examiner Facility

The Public Building Commission authorized the sale of bonds to fund construction of the new Johnson County Courthouse and the county’s first ever medical examiner facility. The sale of the Series 2018A bonds, totaling $148.6 million, with a true interest rate of 2.39 percent.

The Board of Election Canvassers voted today to certify the Johnson County election results. Monday morning, the board met to determine which provision ballots would be counted, which would be partially counted and which should not be counted, based on state statute. Following board action, the approved provisional ballots were tallied and added to the unofficial final results reported on Aug. 7, Election Day.  After reviewing the combined results, the board certified the Johnson County election results.

Park beaches close for the summer

Johnson County Park & Rec beaches are closed for the summer; Aug. 12 was their final day for patron services.

Kill Creek Park beach and marina is closed for the remainder for the summer.

At Shawnee Mission Park, the beach is closed; however the marina is open on the weekends through August and Labor Day weekend for limited hours. The marina also offers rentals, with last rentals one hour prior to close, including canoes, kayaks, paddleboard and pedal boats.

Accessibility project to close Off-Leash Dog Area for five weeks

A construction project which will add an accessible trail to the Off-Leash Dog Area in Shawnee Mission Park will begin on Aug. 13, and will result in the complete closure of the popular off-leash area for about five weeks.

This project involves the construction of approximately one half mile of concrete trail between the parking lot and the existing ramp down to the dog beach area. The new trail will follow the spine of the hill, and will replace the existing wood-chipped trail.

Johnson County Board of County Commissioners adopts 2019 budget

The Johnson County Board of County Commissioners today adopted the county’s fiscal year 2019 budget. The 2019 budget totals $1.097 billion, composed of $815.9 million in expenditures and $281.2 million in reserves.

Unofficial final election results available

On Election Day, 118,708 Johnson County residents took to the polls to vote in the primary elections. The Johnson County Election Office has posted the unofficial final count of votes cast in the county on their webpage. Statewide results are available through the office of the Kansas Secretary of State.

Each year, the county’s community satisfaction survey provides an opportunity for residents to provide feedback on county services and their overall perceptions of the county. In 2018, residents gave Johnson County a 98 percent satisfaction rating as a place to live, a 96 percent satisfaction rating as a place to raise children and an 89 percent satisfaction rating as a place to work.
