Theatre in the Park INDOOR features 'The Happy Elf'

A special holiday musical gift has arrived at Theatre in the Park’s (TTIP) INDOOR with the seasonal tale of “The Happy Elf.” 

The festive musical, composed by Grammy winner and American Idol judge Harry Connick, opens Dec. 8 and continues through Dec. 24 at the Johnson County Arts & Heritage Center, 8788 Metcalf, Overland Park.

Red Flag Warning for fire danger in effect

Red flag fire warning

A Red Flag Warning is in effect for the Kansas City metro area Monday, Dec. 11 until 6 p.m. Issued by the National Weather Service of Kansas City, people are advised to avoid outdoor burning, to secure trailer chains, properly extinguish cigarette butts, and avoid using any equipment which could generate sparks.
Dry relative humidity, strong northwest winds gusting to 35 mph, and very dry surface fuels, will lead to extreme fire danger across the area today. All outdoor burning should be avoided as any fires that start will be capable of rapid spread.

BOCC names interim county manager

Penny Postoak Ferguson

The Johnson County Board of County Commissioners today named Penny Postoak Ferguson as interim county manager, effective Jan. 1, 2018. The appointment by the commission was unanimous in a vote following an executive session this afternoon.

Postoak Ferguson has served as deputy county manager since 2012 when she was promoted from assistant county manager. 

Flu shot still best defense against viruses

The director of the Johnson County Department of Health and Environment says a flu shot is still your best defense against the various influenza viruses circulating in the community.

Director Lougene Marsh says flu vaccination protects against three or four different flu viruses (depending on which vaccine you get) and provides protection throughout the flu season. “While flu vaccine can vary in how well it works from year to year, it still prevents millions of illnesses and tens of thousands of flu-related hospitalizations each year.”
