Traffic Count Procedures

The traffic counts are done by gross volume counters. They work simply by stretching a hose across the entire width of the road.  If they are on a 2-lane roadway then the hose will be stretched across both lanes of traffic.  This means that we count all traffic going in either direction. These counters are axle counters which means for every 2 axles that cross the hose the counter will count 1 unit.  Multi-axle vehicles will be counted according to the number of axles on the vehicle, i.e. a 5 axle vehicle will be counted a 2.5 units. The gross count is derived from air pulses that are sent through the hose to the counter as vehicles cross over the hose in the roadway.

Since the counters work by counting air pulses, on gravel roads the accuracy of the counts isn’t as good as the paved roads.
