Transportation Study

Northwest Corridor Study – This study determined the location of a north/south route and two east/west routes for the northwest portion of Johnson County.

The north/south area of study was Kill Creek/Corliss Road Corridor from K-10 Highway to 151st Street. The route is designated as a Type III – Parkway with ultimate design standards up to six lanes and 150’ to 200’ of right-of-way.

The two east/west study areas were: 1) 111th/119th Street Corridor from K-7 to Kill Creek/Corliss Road Corridor and 119th/135th Street from Kill Creek/Corliss Road Corridor to Evening Star Road. The routes are designated as a Type II – Major Arterials with ultimate design standards of four to six lanes and 120’ of right-of-way.

The recommended alignments were New Kill Creek for the north/south corridor and 111th Street for both east/west corridors (shown on the map link). They were approved by the Board of County Commissioners in July 2002. The County has submitted an Environmental Assessment for these routes to the Kansas Department of Transportation and the Federal Highway Authority for their review. These routes will be added to the County’s Comprehensive Arterial Road Network plan upon a successful completion of the Environmental Assessment. Completion of the Environmental Assessment is projected in late 2004.

Southeast Corridor Study – The Board of County Commissioners concluded the South Metro Connection study in June 2008. In concluding the study, the Board approved a new road alignment along 179th Street between Metcalf Avenue and Nall Road. The road will be designated as a CARNP Type I road (definition shown below). The new 179th Street segment will be added to the County's CARNP map during the update of the County's Comprehensive Plan which is scheduled to begin in 2009. Currently, there are no plans or funds for the construction of this segment.

CARNP Type I: Minor Arterial - Within the standard 80 to 120-foot right-of-way, this roadway would have the least restrictive access control and intersection spacing restrictions. The 120-foot right-of-way would permit development of up to a three or four-lane roadway; however, based on traffic projections, it is envisioned that these roads would be primarily two-lane rural routes with paved or grass shoulders. These roadways would typically be posted with a speed limit of 35 mph in the urban areas and 45 mph in the rural areas. More information on the County's CARNP plan and CARNP designation can be found at: http://www.jocogov.org/pubwrks/planning/CARNP.htm

Sunflower Army Ammunition Plant Corridor Study – This study will determine the location of a north/south route in the Sunflower Army Ammunition Plant. The area of study will be Evening Star/Edgerton Road from K-10 Highway to 151st Street. It will be conducted after a development plan has been approved by the Board of County Commissioners for the Sunflower Army Ammunition Plant and contingent upon funding.
