The Johnson County Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) recognized 2015 Scripps National Spelling Bee co-champion Vanya Shivashankar at today’s regular business session. Chairman Ed Eilert presented Vanya with a Certificate of Special Commendation. Her sister Kavya, the 2009 Scripps National Spelling Bee champion, attended as well.
“We are pleased to recognize Vanya for her extraordinary achievement,” said Chairman Ed Eilert, Johnson County Board of County Commissioners. “This Certificate of Special Commendation is our way to show that the community recognizes the excellence Vanya has demonstrated. We know her family is very proud of her and her sister, as are we.”
In May, Vanya became the co-champion of the 2015 Scripps National Spelling Bee by spelling the word “scherenschnitte.” Vanya shares the first-place spot with Gokul Venkatachalam from Chesterfield, Missouri.
“It means so much to me that the Johnson County community has supported my sister and me since she started competing in the national spelling bee in 2006,” said Vanya Shivashankar.
Vanya attended California Trail Middle School in Olathe and is headed to Olathe North where she will participate in the Distinguished Scholars program. She has shown interest in a possible career in medicine.
